How Do I Order The Right PTAC Unit? We're Here To Help!
If you are replacing an existing 42" x 16" PTAC please follow these steps:
STEP 1) Open up the front room cabinet and look for the manufacturer name and model number. The nomenclature in the model number helps us narrow down the closest replacement model by giving us the BTU size, Voltage and Amperage.
STEP 2)Check to see how your PTAC is powered. Is there a cord that plugs into a 3 prong outlet? Or is there no cord which means the PTAC is "hard" or "directly" wired.
a) If there is a cord that plugs into a 3 prong 220V outlet, look at the configuration of the outlet to determine if it is a 15amp(small), 20amp(perpendicular), or 30amp type(Large Tandem). See image:
b)If your PTAC is directly wired you will need to order a hard wire kit which includes a junction box. An electrician may be required for hard wire applications
If you are purchasing a new PTAC, please follow these steps:
1) Determine the BTU size needed by calculating the square feet of the room and multiply that number by 25. (example: 400 square room x 25 would require a 10000 BTU AC). This is just one guide line. You should consider ceiling height, location of room and some other factors. It is always best to undersize rather than oversize when it comes to BTU's)
2) Select whether you would like a heat pump or heat strip model. Heat pumps generally work better in warmer climates
(All heat pumps PTACS have back up electric heat for colder days).
3) Order a 42" x 16" wall sleeve and select from various exterior grille options. (The rough opening for your wall is 42 1/4" x 16 1/4"
4) Select the proper Voltage and Amperage size. (Most units are 230/208V and run on 20amp service, however a 30amp model would be recommended for a large room that would require more heating).
